MSc-1 Applied Geophysics - Methods (Spiess, Schwenk)

Applied geophysical surveys are the most cost-efficient methods to determine physical properties of the subsurface, and various physical principles are used. In the course we introduce into 6 different fields, dealing with advanced applications and exercises. Potential field methods and wave-based imaging are included. The topics are closely related to the active research at Bremen University and AWI Bremerhaven. In particular, the contents are high-resolution seismics and deep seismic sounding (refraction), gravity and magnetic measurements (including aerogeophysical surveys), geoelectric measurements and the use of ground penetrating radar systems (GPR). Practical skills are to be developed in 6 different exercises, three of them can be chosen to be graded.

MSc-2 Applied Geophysics - Projects (Spiess, Schwenk et al.)

This course offers exclusively practical elements through

1) an individual data project including a semi-professional report,
2) a group field work and
3) the summary of the field work in oral and written form.

The students are motivated to find their own topic for field work, organizing themselves in groups to be able to handle the total workload, organize the equipment and learning to operate the instruments, to evaluate the outcome with respect to data quality and expected results and present them in a way, which is similar to a professional work in an engineering bureau or survey company. The data projects can be work on any geophysical data set, where a scientist from Uni or AWI are able to provide supervision.

MSc-1 Renewable Energy in the Earth System (Spiess, Keil)

The lecture deals with the major renewable energy sources, such as wind, ocean waves, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal power. We introduce into the physical principles, geographic and geologic aspects of energy distribution und temporal variation and approaches for exploitation. MTU covers the aspects of solar, hydroelectric and geothermal power.

MSc-1 Renewable Energy Exploitation  - Seminar (Spiess, Keil)

The seminar is intimately linked to the lecture. Students receive themes to report about, mostly with a focus on exploitation and engineering aspects of renewable power plants.

MSc-2 Soil Investigation for Wind Farms (Spiess, Keil)

The lecture deals with all aspects of a wind farm development, from the early planning through site investigations for environmental, biological, geophysical and geotechnical conditions towards the final placement criteria for wind mills. MTU contributes to geophysical site investigrations.

MSc-2 Project on Offshore Wind Farms - Subsurface Characterization and Energy Exploitation (Spiess, Keil)

Students can choose various topics from the field of renewable energy and seek supervision from scientists in Fraunhofer IWES or Bremen University, Department of Geosciences.
