2022 05 - R/V Merian Cruise MSM107

18.5. - 03.06.2022 - Bremerhaven - Tromsö

MTU participant: Dr. Tilmann Schwenk

MSM Cruise MSM107 aims to study the lateral transport of matter from the shelf to the open ocean at the western Irish Shelf, as northwestern European shelf systems are characterized by strong downwelling circulation and are considered important for carbon export to the open ocean. However, limited observations cause considerable uncertainties regarding the contribution of northwestern European shelf systems to global carbon export. To fill this knowledge gap, research on the cruise will study the link between open ocean and shelf systems. Special emphasis will be placed on off-shore transport, particle formation, organic matter transformation and carbon export to the deep ocean off western Ireland.

MSM107 will start at the 17.05.2022 in Bremerhaven and will end at the 04.06.2022 in Tromsö (Norway). Scientist from MARUM at the University of Bremen, Alfred-Wegener-Institute in Bremerhaven, University of Oldenburg, and Max-Planck-Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI Bremen) will perform joint investigations. Chief scientist is Morten Iversen from MPI Bremen.

A scientist from MTU will run the hydroacoustic systems to reconstruct lateral and vertical sediment movements in time and space, but also to image the water column to identify boundary layers and suspected internal waves.
